Europe’s Oil & Gas Industry Welcomes Green Deal’s Holistic Approach
(Brussels, 11 December 2019) IOGP welcomes the European Green Deal’s holistic approach. The cross-sectoral and multi-layered nature of the Action Plan will allow all stakeholders to pool together their strengths in view of reaching the EU’s overarching environmental, energy and climate objectives.
“The European Green Deal signals the need for taking action to all parts of society – to tackle climate change is a shared responsibility” said François-Régis Mouton, IOGP Director EU Affairs. “The oil & gas industry will continue to minimize its own carbon and methane emissions, but ‘Mainstreaming’ is indeed the right approach – Energy policy should contribute its fair share, but the solution will not come from one or two sectors alone. We need to bring citizens, industry, agriculture, energy suppliers, digital players and others together – the Green Deal gives all stakeholders a mandate to talk to one another and help each other take action to reach this overarching goal”.
By broadening the scope of action, the Green Deal will share the load among stakeholders and raise its chances of success at the same time. But the EU must also recognize the challenge it poses for many parts of society, both business and citizens alike. In order to build trust and confidence, a broad understanding of sustainability is needed.
“In our vision, the Industrial Strategy is the glue that holds all of this together and keeps people on board, but it needs a proactive and innovative approach. High-potential emission mitigation technologies must be given the same opportunity, including those offered by the oil & gas industry” added François-Régis. “Carbon Capture Use and Storage as well as large-scale production of clean hydrogen from natural gas can help bring industry back and retain it in a carbon neutral Europe.”
Our Members complement their traditional oil & gas activities with cutting-edge R&D&I programmes, the deployment renewable of energy across the world, as well as CCUS and hydrogen at large-scale. Together, this allows consumers and businesses to thrive while reducing their environmental footprint.

About IOGP
The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) is the voice of the global upstream industry. Oil and gas continue to provide a significant proportion of the world’s energy to meet growing demands for heat, light and transport.
Our Members produce 40% of the world’s oil and gas. They operate in all producing regions: The Americas, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Caspian, Asia and Australia.
We serve industry regulators as a global partner for improving safety, environmental and social performance. We also act as a uniquely upstream forum in which our members identify and share knowledge and good practices to achieve improvements in health, safety, the environment, security and social responsibility.
