Energy Trilemma
Energy Trilemma
A balanced approach to the energy trilemma is vital to global stability and prosperity. Energy systems must deliver secure and reliable supply, remain affordable and accessible to industry and households, and manage the environment in a sustainable way, in the process of transitioning our energy supply. Prioritising one pillar to the detriment of the others can undermine fundamental services such as affordable access to food, water, and energy. IOGP supports solutions that encompass the three pillars: energy security and reliable supply; affordability and accessibility; and sustainability.
IOGP’s guiding principles related to the Energy Trilemma are:

Balanced Transition
IOGP advocates pragmatic approaches that advance low carbon policies while safeguarding energy security, transparent markets and cost competitiveness, and remaining aligned with regional realities and system needs. IOGP supports socially and economically viable solutions and pathways to the transition.

Managing Socioeconomic Impacts
IOGP champions a transition that supports communities and other stakeholders, aims to protect livelihoods and ensures suitable access to energy.

Infrastructure and Supply
IOGP believes that we should continue to invest in oil and gas infrastructure, supply and production which is both diversified and resilient so that it can withstand unexpected and geopolitical developments.
