Elimination of Routine Flaring
Elimination of Routine Flaring
Routine flaring of gas is flaring of gas during normal oil production operations in the absence of sufficient facilities or amenable geology to re-inject the produced gas, utilize it on-site, or dispatch it to a market (World Bank Zero Routine Flaring initiative). Eliminating routine flaring is an effective near-term action the oil and gas sector can take to support global climate objectives, while also improving safety, enhancing operational efficiency, and promoting responsible resource management.
IOGP is committed to sharing credible, practical strategies and collective expertise to help industry progress towards eliminating routine flaring.
IOGP’s guiding principles related to the Elimination of Routine Flaring are:

Support global initiatives
IOGP supports global initiatives, as well as developing technical guidance and recommended practices to eliminate routine flaring.

Technology and innovation
IOGP supports the continued development of technologies to eliminate routine flaring (i.e., flare gas recovery, injection systems for pressure maintenance, etc.).

Data integrity and transparency
IOGP supports monitoring, including satellite, aerial, drones, and site-based flare detection systems. Transparent data collection and reporting are essential to track progress, ensure accountability, and inform operational decisions.
