Metocean Computer-Based Training (CBT) Course
Metocean is the discipline in the energy industry that is typically responsible to determine the environmental loading conditions and combinations used in the design and operation of offshore, nearshore and onshore structures. Metocean is an abbreviation of the words meteorology and oceanography. Metocean primarily includes consideration of winds, waves, currents and tides, but also encompasses other important parameters such as pressure, visibility, precipitation and ice formation and so on. These parameters are usually derived from both measurements and computer-based modelling.
The Metocean CBT Course is an essential training program designed to provide an understanding of meteorological and physical oceanographic parameters, collectively known as “Metocean.” These parameters play a critical role in the design and operation of offshore and nearshore structures, impacting various industries including offshore energy, shipping, and coastal infrastructure.
Metocean parameters primarily include wind, waves, currents, and tides, but extend to other critical factors such as pressure, visibility, precipitation, and ice formation. These parameters are typically derived from both direct measurements—either local or remote—and advanced numerical modeling techniques.
To enhance the understanding of metocean information among industry professionals, the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) Metocean Committee has developed a computer-based training (CBT) course. This course covers key metocean processes, data types, data collection, analysis methods, and the use of metocean information in standards. The course features visual presentations, videos, voiceovers, and quizzes to help participants retain and apply the knowledge gained.
Aimed at those wanting to understand the use of Metocean data (and is not always a Metocean specialist), including operational staff, project engineers, engineers, logisticians, risk analysts, and decision-makers, this training is designed to help participants understand the uses and limitations of Metocean data. More importantly, it equips them with the knowledge to know when to consult a Metocean Specialist, ensuring safer and more cost-effective operations across the energy sector. This includes both short-term decision-making for weather-sensitive offshore activities and long-term design considerations for structures with lifespans.
Course: Modules: The course consists of four modules:
- Metocean Awareness
- Construction & Operations
- Engineering Design
- Metocean Parameters & Data
The Metocean Awareness module is a prerequisite for all participants, ensuring a foundational understanding of the subject matter. The other three modules are accessible in the course library and are optional for those who wish to further their knowledge and skills in specific areas. Upon successfully completing each module, participants will receive a certificate of completion, recognizing their achievement and commitment to professional development..
This structure allows for a tailored learning experience, catering to individual interests and career goals while maintaining a comprehensive approach to Metocean studies.
Course Content: The Metocean CBT course covers the following key areas:
- Dominant Metocean Processes
- Metocean Parameters
- Data Collection Methods.
- Metocean Data Analysis
- Application of Metocean Data
Learning Methodology: The course is delivered through a variety of engaging formats, including:
- Visual presentations
- Instructional videos
- Audio-guided explanations
- Interactive quizzes
Each section of the course is designed to ensure a deep understanding of the subject matter and to assess the student’s knowledge through interactive content.
Who Should Enroll? The Metocean CBT Course is tailored for a broad range of professionals who work with or rely on Metocean data. This includes:
- Operational Staff: Individuals involved in offshore operations who depend on forecast information to make critical decisions.
- Engineering and Logistics Personnel: Professionals responsible for the design and logistics of offshore and nearshore structures.
- Risk Analysts and Decision Makers: Those who need to understand the risks associated with varying Metocean conditions in their decision-making process.
Key Benefits: By completing this course, participants will:
- Gain a clearer understanding of how Metocean conditions impact operational safety and design.
- Be able to interpret and apply Metocean data correctly, reducing the likelihood of costly mistakes or operational delays.
- Learn when to seek advice from Metocean specialists for more complex or high-risk scenarios.
A thorough grasp of Metocean issues can significantly enhance the safety and cost-effectiveness of offshore operations.
Course Duration: 4-6 hours
Course Access: The Metocean CBT Course is currently available to IOGP members, EPCs and other third-party contractors.. It offers a valuable opportunity for professional development and operational improvement across the industry.
Although the CBT course is offered at no cost, with IOGP funding each registration, there is a limit on the number of registrations. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that when you register that you do eventually complete all modules.
We kindly ask you to complete the brief survey after finishing each module, as your insights are valuable in shaping future modules.
If we discover that individuals have registered but have not made any progress within three months, we will remove them from the course.
