Although our industry has made significant progress, life altering incidents are still occurring.  We must strengthen and enhance the effectiveness of our safeguards, which protect us against risks and ultimately save lives.  By establishing common definitions with IOGP for incidents that have, or could have, life altering  consequences, we can better collaborate as an industry.  Through sharing and analyzing these events, combined with proactive learning, we can strengthen our safeguards to prevent reoccurrence.  We can become better together.

Our collective purpose is to keep everyone safe and whole, both mentally and physically as our people are our most valuable asset.

By uniting as an industry, we exhibit strong and visible leadership in demonstrating our genuine concern and care for one another. This collective effort allows us to effectively minimize the occurrence and impact of life-altering injuries and fatalities while ensuring we focus on what matters most.

“You can’t improve what you can’t measure”

One of bp’s safety aims is to “eliminate fatalities and life changing injuries by 2025”.  We have worked closely with IOGP to develop the industry’s first definition for Permanent Impairment which bp adopted as life changing injuries in 2023. This is a great example of working effectively together to standardize, measure and improve safety within our industry.

Chevron is fervently committed to preventing fatalities and life-changing injuries among our workforce, and we believe that full participation in this IOGP-led industry effort to share data and learning is essential for every member organization to achieve their preventive goals. The men and women who work on the front line in our industry depend on our alignment and commitment in this cause.

We can’t manage the risk of fatal incidents in the same way we manage slips, trips or twisted ankles. How to fail safe and avoid Fatality and Permanent Impairments is what we need to talk about, what we need to count, and what we need to spend our efforts on.

We care for our people and their safety. In Shell, we are committed to eliminating Fatalities and Permanent Impairments (FPIs). Whilst not every incident has the potential to cause significant harm, our strategic focus on FPIs ensures we prioritize our resources to make the greatest impact on the safety and care. Through standardization and collaboration, we maximise our mutual learning and accelerate our journey towards Goal Zero.
