IOGP Geomatics Webinar: Geophysical Position Data Formats

June 17 @ 2:00 pm - 2:45 pm BST

Virtual Event Virtual Event

June 17. 14:00 – 14:45 Hrs.

The IOGP Geomatics Committee would like to welcome you to a webinar briefing on v2.0 of the Seismic Positioning data exchange formats (‘P-formats’). The P1 (final position data), P2 (raw positioning data) and P6 (bin grid position data) formats, first published in the 1990s by UKOOA, were inherited by the IOGP Geomatics committee in the 1990s, and the first major IOGP revision (v1.0) was published by IOGP in 2012.

The P-formats provide a record of key positioning elements for all modern seismic acquisition methodologies, allowing a full record of all source and receiver positions to be maintained, along with a host of subsidiary position acquisition information. They also support independent verification of the loaded position of seismic data within industry interpretation applications.

After extensive industry feedback, the formats have been updated to support the latest seismic acquisition developments, via a number of object and attribute record extensions. Improvements also include a number of new records, to allow better recording and management of: pre-plot position; bin grid definition; dynamic CRS and point conversion documentation; survey perimeter; source / receiver edits; source steering; current data; USBL system configuration. To retain a level of continuity, all this has been achieved without fundamentally altering the underlying format structure.

The primary target audience is seismic acquisition, navigation and planning specialists and project managers, and subsurface data loading specialists and data managers within the energy industry. The webinar will highlight the main improvements, and a short Q&A session will be held after the briefing, to allow for queries and discussion.
