Description

This document provides a classification system for Well Control Incidents (WCIs). A WCI occurs when there is a failure or degradation of the defined well barrier envelope(s) that are designed and managed to keep fluids in the well or the reservoir. This classification system was established to allow IOGP Member Companies to share lessons learned from well control incidents and near misses with industry. The sharing of these lessons helps to promote learning, prevent the recurrence of similar errors, and enable safer operations.
A key update in this edition is the introduction of a NEW DEFINITION: WCI Level 3 – Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) – MPD Influx Management. This addition is to provide clarity on classification of WCIs during MPD operations.
