IOGP Report 355

Learn how organisations can apply a HSE-MS framework to watercraft operations

Managing risks associated with the use of watercraft can be particularly challenging. The marine and water environment is unforgiving, hazards can escalate rapidly, and the variety of available equipment and variation in its application is immense. An earlier set of guidelines, HSE aspects in a contracting environment for geophysical operations (OGP Report 317) described a framework for minimising health, safety and environmental risks during any geophysical operation. When written, these guidelines were intended to encompass the use of watercraft during geophysical operations. However, it has since become clear that there is a need for new guidelines more specifically addressed to watercraft in geophysical operations. These guidelines provide organisations with information needed to apply to watercraft operations a HSE-MS framework, such as outlined in Report 317. These guidelines focus on the recognition and management of the hazards and risks that are associated with such operations.
