IOGP P1/11 geophysical position data exchange format – technical specification

IOGP Report 483-1

Seismic data provides a fundamental input to exploration, appraisal, and production decisions, minimizing risk, optimizing well locations, and managing reservoirs through 4D technology. It is a key evaluation and monitoring input for carbon capture and storage projects, for example via high resolution products for imaging the overburden. The IOGP P1/11 data exchange format is a tool, used industry-wide, for geophysical positioning data, addressing the challenges of complex modern seismic acquisition.

Description

Seismic data provides a fundamental input to exploration, appraisal, and production decisions, minimizing risk, optimizing well locations, and managing reservoirs through 4D technology. It is a key evaluation and monitoring input for carbon capture and storage projects, for example via high resolution products for imaging the overburden. The IOGP P1/11 data exchange format is used industry-wide for geophysical positioning data, addressing the challenges of complex modern seismic acquisition. Utilizing the IOGP EPSG position description, the P-format provides a highly structured tool for delivery and semi-automated QC of the spatial element of the data. With seismic survey costs reaching hundreds of millions of dollars, and positioning elements contributing some 25% of this cost, maintaining spatial integrity is critical to safeguarding the value of the seismic data. The IOGP P1/11 was developed in consultation with operators, major survey and seismic contractors, service providers, and software vendors. This new version integrates industry experience and innovation from recent years and aligns the format with the latest advances in geodesy.
