This Guidance Note has been prepared as a follow-up to a workshop in Istanbul on 11 November 2013 hosted by South Oil Company, the state company responsible for exploration and production activities in southern Iraq. Geomatics managers of oil and gas companies active in southern Iraq were the principal participants of the workshop, which was organized and chaired by the IOGP Geomatics Committee. The objectives of this IOGP Guidance Note are to provide: an overview of legacy and current coordinate reference systems (CRS) used in southern Iraq awareness of the geodetic infrastructure of Iraq and its pitfalls guidance for the extension and corrections of the IGRS network of geodetic control points (HARN points) guidance to users of GIS and other geoscience software used in the oil and gas and civil engineering industries. The target audience for this Guidance Note includes geodesists in Iraq involved in extending and maintaining Iraq’s geodetic infrastructure and geodesists and surveyors in the oil and gas industry, involved in geodetic survey work.
