Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been widely acknowledged as an effective component in the toolkit to achieve the targets for the year 2050 set by the 2016 Paris Agreement on climate change. More than twenty CCS facilities are already operational worldwide, several of which are operated by IOGP Member Companies.
Following a review of the existing literature (standards, guides, and other industry documents) on CCS, a gap analysis was performed to identify missing or inconsistent components in the currently existing standards that apply to CCS activities. This analysis included operational, regulatory, risk management, health, safety and environmental (HSE), technological, and engineering perspectives. Recommendations were generated to address such gaps in order to provide state-of-the-art solutions where there remains an absence of standards or where there is a need for an existing standard to be revised. This document provides details on the methodology used, gaps identified, and provides recommendations for addressing these gaps.
