This report has been produced by the joint OGP/IAGC Sound & Marine Life Task Force. It is the first in what will be a series of technical monographs on aspects of the issue of how industry sounds (at all stages in the E&P lifecycle) may affect marine life. The report has been written as a ‘primer’ to assist the reader in understanding the extremely complex topic of underwater acoustics. Inevitably, the report contains a number of physical and mathematical expressions that are essential to explain this intricate subject. We have tried to keep these to a minimum.
