Description

Get a technical overview of produced water discharged to sea from offshore oil and gas production operations.

This report is a technical summary of the available information on produced water discharged to sea from offshore oil and gas production operations. It updates a report issued in 1994 by OGP, extending the geographical coverage of the review from the North Sea to encompass operations worldwide. The report contains detailed information on the composition of produced water, with emphasis on those substances over which particular concerns have been raised. It reviews current understanding of the fate and effects of discharged constituents and the associated monitoring and survey activities that are part of produced water management strategies. The report provides limited information on volumes of water produced, historical and projected trends, naturally occurring radioactivity in produced water, or treatment technology. These have been addressed in other OGP publications. Production chemicals or treatment chemicals are not discussed in this report.
