Building on success: BOP JIP starts Phase II
Eight months after the launch of the Blowout Preventer (BOP) Reliability Joint Industry Project (JIP), Phase II is about to begin.
Managed jointly by IOGP and the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC), the first phase of the JIP established an industry-wide BOP Reliability Database. The aim was to produce a single source of quality information on the performance of BOP systems.
Thanks to the efforts of seven contractor companies, 10 operators and three equipment manufacturers, that database now up and running. It meets ‘original equipment manufacturer’ reporting requirements in line with API standard 53.
According to IOGP Safety and Security Director Chris Hawkes, the project has already produced measureable benefits to all 20 participants: Contractors Diamond Offshore, Ensco, Maersk Drilling, Noble, Pacific Drilling, Seadrill, and Transocean; operators Anadarko, BP, Chevron, CNOOC/Nexen, Kosmos, ExxonMobil, Petrobras, Shell, Statoil, and Total; and equipment manufacturers Cameron, GE Oil & Gas, and NOV.
‘Thanks to these companies’ collaboration in the JIP, we’ve seen measurable reductions in BOP non-productive time,’ Chris says.
Phase II participants will have access to knowledge about BOP defects and failures from across the industry. Phase II will also provide further opportunities to improve the quality of the database and provide members with to key learnings through JIP collaboration.
In addition to operators and offshore contractors with subsea BOPs, Phase II will offer participation to offshore contractors with surface BOPs only and to onshore contractors.
Phase II will provide further opportunities to improve the quality of the database and provide members with access to key learnings through JIP collaboration. New Phase II participants will also obtain industry-wide BOP defect and failure knowledge which should lead to improved BOP safety and integrity in their own operations.
