Monthly Reflections October 2024

Dear Colleagues,

Working together we achieve so much more.  In my September Reflections I mentioned several Subcommittees and Expert Groups were going to meet during October and I would provide an update on progress.  The meetings have now been successfully held, and I’d like to give a high-level summary of the outcomes.

Thank you to the hosts, chairs and the participants for giving their time, energy and expertise to progress these opportunities and further improve our industry.

  • Safety Data and Fatality and Permanent Impairment (FPI) Expert Group (Chairs Kirsty Walker and Andrea Parker) have seen a very positive response from IOGP Members on the reporting of this new metric.  The first member data was published in an SPE paper and the first full report will be published in 2025.
  • The Human Performance Subcommittee (Chair Ajay Shah) is working on a Framework to support building the Human Performance Principles into management systems.  Publishing is expected in 2025.
  • The Contractor HSE Management Expert Group (Chair Heidi Mykland) has made significant progress in updating the widely adopted IOGP Recommended Practice 423 with the objective to simplify the guidance and make it even easier to adopt. Again, publishing is expected in 2025.
  • The Security Committee met in KL, hosted by Petronas, to discuss and share incidents and actions to mitigate emerging global threats.
  • The Health Committee (Chair Guillermo Gomez Diaz) met in Bahrain, hosted by Bapco Energies, and made significant strides in key areas including mental health and leadership, the health golden rules and the role of health in the energy transition.
  • The Land Transport Subcommittee (Chair Albert Ploeg) met in Oman, hosted by PDO, to advance road safety with a particular focus on how to further improve IOGP Report 365.  The team also explored opportunities to collaborate on road safety with OPAL, the national business society in the Sultanate of Oman.

We finished the month with the IOGP Members’ Congress where we celebrated 50 years of excellence and the progress we are making to make our industry safer and healthier.  It has been a successful and fulfilling month and I feel very proud of the IOGP team that’s making this possible.

As we move towards the end of 2024, November will see more teams getting together to further advance their work and I will provide an update at the end of the month.

Kind regards,
Steve
