Monthly Reflections July 2025

Dear Colleagues,

Earlier this year I shared my reflections on people changes and how to manage the impact of the change (January 2025 Reflections).  At the time we were going through a change in the Chair of the IOGP Safety Committee.  We are currently going through another change.

Dr. Ismaeel Hussain has completed his secondment at IOGP and is returning home to Bahrain and Bapco Energies.  It has been an absolute pleasure to get to know Ismaeel over the past 2 years and I would like to express my gratitude for his excellent support to the IOGP Health and Safety Committees.  During Ismaeel’s time with IOGP the Health and Safety Committees have gone from strength to strength with new and updated Publications across all risk areas and increased participation and engagement with Members.  Thank you to the Chairs of the Committees and Subcommittees and the IOGP Members for your collaboration and engagement and working together with Ismaeel to achieve this amazing progress.  Most of all I will remember Ismaeel’s kindness and positive nature and the calm way he dealt with the many challenges and opportunities during his time at IOGP.  Ismaeel has had a profound and positive impact on the industry which I have seen confirmed in the past few weeks by the many positive comments from the extensive network he has developed among IOGP Members and partners.

As we sadly say farewell to Ismaeel and recognise his contributions we give a warm welcome to his successor.  Matteo Palazzolo is joining the IOGP team as a secondee from Saipem and brings deep technical and leadership experience in Health and Safety. Ismaeel and Matteo have completed a positive handover and I very much look forward to working with Matteo as he brings his own ideas, experience and style to the team to build on the legacy left by Ismaeel.

Last month I reflected on the publishing of the 2024 Safety Performance data.  The last few days has seen the publishing of the latest Process Safety and Motor Vehicle data.  These annual reports provide trend analysis, benchmarking, and the identification of areas and activities on which efforts should be focused to bring about the greatest improvements in performance.  Thank you to the IOGP Safety Data, Process Safety and Land Transport Subcommittees for their efforts to collect, validate and publish the data.  The open and transparent reporting of safety data enables us to understand performance trends and identify where to act.

Kind regards,
Steve
