Dear Colleagues,

This month I would like to highlight the partnership between SPE, CEDEP and IOGP to develop the Safety Leadership Academy.  The first multi-company pilot Academy was held in 2024 with 31 participants from 15 companies.  Building on the success of the pilot we are holding 2 Academies in 2025.

Safety starts with leaders having the skills and capabilities to lead in a way that demonstrates care and unlocks the safety leadership capacity within their teams.  The Academy provides participants with the opportunity to further develop their own safety leadership skills and competency and learn how to apply them in their individual businesses.  It’s an in-depth, highly interactive programme that helps participants prepare for challenges in a world that is more and more uncertain and complex.

The Academy brings together leaders from across the industry; Oil and Gas Operators and Service Companies and Operational leaders together with Health and Safety leaders.  This diversity makes the learning sessions even more engaging and provides new insights through interaction with participants who bring different perspectives on often challenging and uncomfortable topics.

The programme is in 3 phases with 2 face-to-face sessions either side of a virtual phase.  Each participant brings a safety challenge and during the Academy has the opportunity to work on the challenge and receive feedback from the Academy Faculty and their fellow participants. The Academy has a core content and is agile enough to adapt to the needs of the participants.

There were many learnings from the 2024 Pilot that have been incorporated into the 2025 Academies, thank you to the Pilot participants who shared their insights and learnings and have shaped the future designs.  One insight was to deliver the Academy in different locations so after Europe in 2024, the 2025 Academies are in The Middle East and North America.  The content will be tailored to the needs of the participants and reflect the regional differences within the industry.

I look forward to the continued growth and success of the Academy as it builds a community of Safety Leaders that are working together to create a positive impact on the lives of the people working in the oil and gas industry.
