Monthly Reflections April 2025
Dear Colleagues,
I have recently returned from an incredibly productive and energising week in Houston. 3 significant events in the same week meant an efficient use of time and ensured maximum progress on some very important topics for the IOGP Safety Committee.
The week started with the first in-person Safety Committee Meeting of 2025 hosted by Shell at their Woodcreek Campus. The agenda covered important on-going focus areas for the Committee including discussions on adoption and implementation of Recommended Practices, Contractor HSE Management, Control of Work, Fatalities and Permanent Impairments and kicking off collaboration with industry partners on Process Safety Leading Indicators. The Committee Meeting is an opportunity to check-in on the progress being made by the Subcommittees and Expert Groups and guide and steer their work. Thank you to all the participants and especially thanks to Arnold van den Dool and Kenneth Reynolds from Shell for hosting and ensuring a smooth meeting for the in-person and the virtual participants. Thanks also to Luca DeCarli for the successful chairing of his first Safety Committee in-person meeting.
The second event of the week saw the IOGP Digital and Safety Committees coming together to discuss how they can collaborate to unlock safety improvements through digital innovation. Technology is playing a huge role in improving safety performance and the workshop started with IOGP Members sharing case studies on learning from data and incidents, the use of cameras and machine learning, the benefits of wearable technology and also the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence. The 2 Committees agreed on how they will continue to work together to further unlock these opportunities. Thank you to Lucyna Kryla-Straszewska, Dmitry Gurevich and Ismaeel Husain for planning and delivering a workshop that has created the opportunity for further collaboration and accelerating digital opportunities to improve safety performance.
The week wrapped up with the IOGP Summit 2025. A chance for IOGP Members to engage in strategic discussions and share best practices and learnings. From a Safety perspective, the agenda included Process Safety learnings from Bridget Todd at Baker Hughes and insights from Luca DeCarli as the Chair of the Safety Committee on unlocking the full potential of digital in the field of safety.
As well as the safety progress in these 3 events the in-person meetings created the right environment to build relationships and share valuable insights and learnings.
