Latest safety report shows reduction in fatal accidents

Data submitted for IOGP’s annual Safety performance indicators report recorded an 8% drop in the Fatal Accident Rate and a decrease in fatalities from 33 in 2017 to 31 in 2018. This was against a background of a 2% increase in work hours reported. A total of 46 Member Companies supplied data.

While the total recordable injury rate increased by 3% over the previous year’s results, the lost time injury frequency decreased by 4%.

“Despite the fact that most of the figures in our latest report show improvement, every death and every injury must be considered a failure,” said IOGP Executive Director Gordon Ballard. “That is why it is so important to understand the causes behind each and every incident.”

Analysis of the 27 fatal incident descriptions, in which there were 31 fatalities, has shown that at least 23 incidents (85%) related to the IOGP Life-Saving Rules and that these incidents and fatalities may have been prevented by the adoption of this system.
