The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) Announces New Chair

Giovanni Cristofoli

(London, 28 October 2024) – Giovanni Cristofoli, Senior Vice President of bp Solutions, will be heading the Board of the global Association in its 50th year.

Based in London, Gio has been with bp for 23 years, serving in multiple leadership roles globally. Currently he is the Senior Vice President of bp Solutions, the organization that provides operations, maintenance, engineering and subsea support to bp’s oil, gas and refining businesses as well as delivering logistics services, executing turnarounds and site projects. Gio has made significant contributions to the energy sector, particularly in operational excellence, driving safety and sustainability initiatives, and leading major transformation projects. Throughout his career, he has held roles such as Vice President of Operations and Major Project Operations, Operations Director as well as Maintenance and Reliability Manager at the Tangguh LNG plant in Indonesia. His extensive leadership background also includes roles in the North Sea operations, both offshore and in the office.

Gio is passionate about developing engineers, as well as leaders. He is a strong advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion. He chaired the Women in Production Operations network and is executive sponsor of several voluntary employee-led groups.

Gio holds a master’s degree in Process Engineering and a PhD in Thermodynamics, from the University of Padua, Italy.

Gio has been a long-serving representative of IOGP, having held the position of Vice Chair, where he actively fostered collaboration and helped steer the Association toward safer, more efficient, and sustainable industry practices.

“Becoming Chair of IOGP is profoundly personal for me. My career and the IOGP have become closely connected over the years, driven by shared values. It’s an honour to take on this role, because of the deep connection I feel with the organization”, Gio said.

“Several defining career moments underscore IOGP’s impact on my life. As an engineer on a North Sea platform, 23 years ago, bp’s golden rules of safety proved lifesaving aligned with IOGP’s Life-Saving Rules. Fast forward, the life-saving rules were a key topic of conversation amongst a 3,000 strong workforce executing a mega turnaround when I visited at a US refinery, last week.

“As we transition, IOGP’s role in advancing safety, health, engineering and environmental standards, and now energy transitions are crucial. The strength of our collective expertise allows us to address challenges no single company can solve alone, reinforcing our leadership in creating a responsible and sustainable energy future. I’m excited to continue shaping our future efforts in safety, sustainability, and performance”, he added.

Gio succeeds Kim McHugh, Vice President of the Rockies Business Unit at Chevron, who led IOGP as Chair since November 2022. She took on the role one year into the implementation of the Association’s new strategic direction, marked by global challenges and industry transformation. Kim’s leadership saw the advancement of IOGP’s strategic direction in critically important areas such as safety standardization across the oil and gas industry and energy transition.

“It has been an immense privilege to lead IOGP as Chair through this transformative period. Together, we’ve advanced crucial safety and sustainability recommended practices attributed to the collective efforts of our members and secretariat, as we continue to drive forward in shaping a safer, more efficient and sustainable industry”, Kim said.

The handover of the Chair position took place in conjunction with the 50th Extraordinary General Meeting and Members’ Congress in London, on 28th October 2024.
