The IOGP Geomatics Committee recently held a webinar on the recently released Report 655 – Guidelines for 4D Seismic Surveys. This is a new report that was developed specifically by the Geomatics Committee for the design and execution phase of 4D seismic surveys. The report aims to consolidate industry knowledge, share best practices, and ensure safe, efficient, and effective delivery of 4D seismic surveys.
4D or timelapse seismic is a fundamental tool in the geoscience toolbox that supports the evaluation of changes in rock properties due to production and/or injection of various fluids, and their potential movement in the subsurface. This report details the fundamentals of 4D Towed Streamer (TS) and Ocean Bottom Seismic (OBS)/Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) seismic. Areas covered include key survey design considerations, future-proofing monitor surveys, technology options, survey planning, source and receiver repeatability, current prediction, feather matching and SIMOPS. A large number of high-quality images help to explain and visualise the concepts.
This report is strongly recommended for all stakeholders involved in planning and executing 4D seismic surveys, especially those in survey design, contracting and procurement, and operations supervisory roles.
The IOGP Report 655 – Guidelines for 4D seismic surveys is available to download from the IOGP Publications library.
