Metocean Committee launches computer-based training (CBT) course

IOGP’s Metocean Committee has launched a computer-based training (CBT) course that covers key metocean processes, data types, collection, analysis, and application in industry standards. The course uses visual presentations, videos, voiceovers, and quizzes to help participants retain and apply the knowledge.

Metocean refers to the discipline in the energy industry that determines the environmental conditions used in the design and operation of offshore and nearshore structures. It encompasses meteorology and oceanography, including winds, waves, currents, tides, pressure, visibility, precipitation, and ice formation.

Aimed at operational staff, project engineers, logisticians, risk analysts, and decision-makers (not just metocean specialists), this training helps participants understand the uses and limitations of metocean data. Importantly, it equips them to recognize when to consult a metocean specialist, ensuring safer and more cost-effective operations across the energy sector, from short-term weather-sensitive decisions to long-term structural design.

The Metocean CBT Course is currently available only to IOGP members but will be made accessible to third-party contractors in the future. This course provides valuable professional development and operational improvement opportunities across the industry.
