View from above: the vital role of remote sensing in powering environmental solutions

On February 27, 2025, the IOGP’s Geomatics Committee’s Remote Sensing Subcommittee held a Members-Only workshop on the applications of remote sensing in environmental solutions. The event brought together geomatics and environmental professionals from across three IOGP directorates—Engineering, Energy Transition, and Environment—reflecting a broad recognition of the technology’s increasing relevance in sustainability efforts.

With over 150 attendees representing more than 30 member companies, the workshop showcased the latest innovations, discussed emerging challenges, and mapped the future of remote sensing in environmental projects.

The event discussions underscored the vital role of remote sensing in advancing sustainable, environmental solutions. With new satellite missions, AI-powered analytics, and cloud-based geospatial platforms on the horizon, the potential for remote sensing in oil and gas continues to grow. As the industry moves forward, fostering collaboration and standardization will be key to maximizing the impact of these technologies.

Looking ahead, IOGP plans further engagements in 2025, offering subject-matter experts additional opportunities to explore the intersection of remote sensing and environmental stewardship.
