The IOGP Geomatics Committee recently hosted a webinar to introduce the newly published Technical Flash – GNSS interference, jamming and spoofing: definition, detection, and defence. The Technical Flash highlights the growing risks posed by GNSS interference, jamming, and spoofing to energy industry operations and provides practical recommendations to improve operational resilience and risk management.
During the webinar, Walter Jardine and Elchin Teymurlu highlighted the growing impact of GNSS interference, jamming, and spoofing on offshore and onshore navigation, positioning, network timing systems and operations in general. The session outlined practical mitigation measures, including risk assessment, resilient positioning technologies, monitoring, and anti-jamming solutions, all underpinned by a strong understanding of project positioning accuracy (and system time synchronisation) requirements. Additional sources of information and monitoring were also briefly highlighted (suppliers, institutions, manufacturers and online services etc.) Case studies demonstrated how GNSS disruptions can cause operational delays, increased costs and safety risks, reinforcing the need for risk assessment, preparedness and redundancy.
Many thanks to our webinar hosts, Walter Jardine (IOGP Geomatics Committee Vice Chair) and Elchin Teymurlu (BP Survey Technical Manager), for sharing their expertise and practical insights.
