IOGP’s Life-Saving Rules set to enter a new era — supported by VisionAI
The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) is exploring an exciting new opportunity that will potentially usher in a new era of industrial safety by integrating Vision Artificial Intelligence (VisionAI) with its globally recognised Life-Saving Rules, and Process Safety Fundamentals. This strategic move applies the power of machine vision technology to detect unsafe behaviours and conditions in near-real time, turning safety principles into active digital tools on worksites.
The project sits at the heart of IOGP’s just launched Digitally Enabled Safe Sites Initiative (DESSI), a joint programme of IOGP’s Digital Transformation and Safety Committees. Its goal is to leverage emerging technologies to enhance risk awareness, strengthen site safety culture, and prevent incidents before they occur. It will develop a guideline on how to use VisionAI Technology to improve safety on sites using IOGP Life-Saving Rules and Process Safety Fundamentals.

When integrated with strong safety leadership and a robust reporting culture, these advancements can greatly enhance our ability to prevent incidents.”
Digital Eyes on Safety
VisionAI uses machine vision algorithms to analyse images captured from CCTV, drones, and wearable devices, flagging potential risks such as unsafe behaviours or hazardous site conditions. These AI “digital assistants” send alerts to individuals and supervisors through dashboards, wearables, or other communication channels, enabling both immediate intervention and post-incident learning.
By embedding VisionAI within site safety management frameworks, companies can also detect systemic trends, identify recurring issues, and foster a more proactive safety culture.
Building IOGP’s VisionAI framework
To ensure consistent and responsible implementation of VisionAI across the energy sector, IOGP has formed a VisionAI Expert Group comprising specialists from ten leading Member companies. This group will develop an industry framework to guide the deployment of VisionAI solutions in alignment with IOGP’s recommended practices.
The framework will address:
- Integration with Site Safety Management Systems
- Classification of Observations aligned with IOGP Recommended Practices
- Data Privacy & Ethical Use
- Effectiveness Evaluation through before/after indicators and worker feedback
