Corporate Responsibility and the Business of Progress

Joe Naylor, Vice President of Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Chevron

Affordable energy is a catalyst for economic growth and prosperity. Our industry plays a key role in providing that energy responsibly while protecting the environment and working with our partners to strengthen the communities where we work.

At Chevron, we are focused on conducting our business in a socially responsible and ethical manner, protecting people and the environment, supporting universal human rights, and benefitting local communities.

Why do we do this? Because we are corporate citizens who believe that our business success is tied to the progress and prosperity of the people we collaborate with and the communities where we work.

We recently published our 2017 Corporate Responsibility Report Highlights which explains how we proudly develop the energy that families, communities and businesses depend on – helping improve lives and power the world forward. It summarises the strategic social investments we make in health, education and economic development around the globe. And it demonstrates our ethical, environmentally responsible, safe and respectful business practices and performance. The video below provides you with a snapshot of what we do.

The report highlights many of our achievements. For example, in 2017, we achieved a score of 100 percent on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index for the 13th consecutive year. With regards to safety performance, we matched the record low for our ‘Days away from work’ rate and set a new record low for our ‘Total recordable incident’ rate.

Importantly, our latest publication focuses on the environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues that matter to our business and our stakeholders – including investors, customers, host governments, local communities and employees.

The prioritized issues covered in our report reflect the topics outlined in the third edition of the oil and gas industry guidance on voluntary sustainability reporting. Published in 2015, the guidance was jointly produced by IPIECA, the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues, the American Petroleum Institute (API), and the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP).

This guidance represents industry consensus on the most prevalent issues and indicators for our sector and helps companies report on priority issues. I’m proud of the role Chevron played, in collaboration with our peers, in the development of this guidance. You can learn more about how we report on all 34 indicators here.

I would like to close with something else I am proud of – and that’s working in an industry that raises the living standards for billions of people around the world. At Chevron we call this the business of progress… and we’ve been doing it for nearly 140 years. Across our operations, we support workforces, stakeholders and communities by doing business the right and responsible way. I hope our report gives you an insight into this and encourages dialogue on how we as an industry can continue to enable human progress around the world.
