OGP welcomes leading EU maritime spatial planner

With over 90% of European oil and gas production taking place offshore, OGP members have a great interest in the EU’s draft legislation on maritime spatial planning.

For this reason the EU Committee’s Marine & Environment Sub Committee recently invited Mr Haitze Siemers, Head of Unit on Maritime Policy at DG Mare, to attend a committee meeting. Mr Siemers is the EU official who coordinated the issuing of the new draft legislation on Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP).

“The meeting raised some really interesting and important points and I was very pleased we managed to have such an open discussion on the issue with the Commission,” said Emmanuel Garland, the Sub Committee Chair.

OGP had actively participated in the workshops organised by the Commission to structure the MSP debate. The Association’s objective was to ensure that maritime spatial plans recognise the strategic value of the EU’s oil and gas production in terms of security of supply, as well as its significant contribution to Europe’s economy and society.
