We’re supporting research
The E&P SOUND & MARINE LIFE JOINT INDUSTRY PROGRAMME supports research to help increase understanding of the effect of sound on marine life generated by oil and gas exploration and production activities.
It currently has two active Requests for Proposal (RFPs).
We are the global voice of our industry, pioneering excellence in safe, efficient and sustainable energy supply - an enabling partner for a low carbon future

Common questions about oil and gas
How is the oil and gas industry supporting the transition to a lower carbon future?
There are different paths to achieve a lower carbon future. Each region, each country has a unique and diverse energy system as its starting point, with different energy resources, demand dynamics, technologies, stock of capital, geographics and cultures. The oil and gas industry contributes in three ways: by reducing the emissions in their own operations, by providing cleaner energy, and by developing lower carbon technologies such as Carbon Capture Storage and Utilization (CCUS) or clean hydrogen. Oil and gas are known as fuel. What else are oil and gas for?
Oil and gas are playing a major role in our everyday life. Not only as fuel, for heating and cooking or for power generation. You will find items made from oil and gas in your household, for example computers, smartphones, window frames, furniture, tires etc. But also many items used in the medical field are made from oil and gas. How can oil and gas help enhance quality of life?
Access to affordable, reliable, and versatile energy is key to enhance the quality of life of billions of people. Currently almost 800 million people are living without access to electricity, and hundreds of millions more only have access to very limited or unreliable electricity. Billions of people do not have access to clean cooking fuels. For the foreseeable future this demand cannot be met by renewables only. Oil and gas will continue to play a major role.
Will oil and gas still be needed in 2040?
According to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) 2020 Sustainable Development Scenario, in 2040, still 46 percent of the global energy demand will be met by oil and gas (compared to 56 percent in 2019). To meet this demand, significant investments in existing and new fields are required.
