“Standardization plays a key role in achieving volume on selected solutions, obtaining cost and time reductions and HSE and quality improvements,” says Roald Sirevaag of Statoil, who chairs IOGP’ Subsea Committee. “I believe the present economic situation gives the industry the strong incentive it needs to take important steps forward within standardization.”
The Committee’s strategy on standardization is to further industrialize and standardize subsea systems through technical collaboration within the industry. This will deliver significantly lower CAPEX and improved lead time for subsea production systems, he says.
This will be achieved through promoting standard configurations, elements, processes and industry standards. Inherent in this work is to maintain or enhance HSE performance and increased quality to deliver improved reliability and availability.
“Subsea trees provide one example. We need to standardize the metallurgy and quality of the forgings, the functional requirements of the trees as well as limiting the types we purchase (horizontal, vertical, with or without tubing hanger spool etc.). To achieve this we need further collaboration between senior management and the technical authorities in the companies,” says Roald.
Roald has a MSc in Petroleum Production and a diploma in Economics. He began his career as a drilling engineer in 1984 and moved to subsea in 1989. Prior to his present assignment as Statoil VP for subsea technology and diving, he was chief engineer for subsea.
