Crew resource management can be standard industry practice

Crew resource management (CRM), was first recognised as a safety requirement in 1979, when the US National Transportation Safety Board issued its landmark recommendation to require CRM training for airline crews.

CRM covers cognitive, social and personal resource skills – the non-technical skills that complement and contribute to safe and efficient task performance.
Over the years, other industries, including the maritime and healthcare sectors, have acknowledged CRM as a good practice.

With the publication of Report 502, Guidelines for implementing Well Operations Crew Resource Management training, IOGP is leading efforts to ensure the oil and gas industry adopts CRM as a standard practice to reduce or even avoid the occurrence of major well incidents.

This new report builds on previous work:

  • IOGP Report No. 501, Crew Resource Management for Well Operations teams
  • Guidance on Crew Resource Management (CRM) and non-technical skills training programmes, published by the Energy Institute (“the EI report”)

IOGP’s latest publication prepares providers to deliver training programmes that introduce and sustain well operations crew resource management (WOCRM). It sets learning objectives for given CRM competencies (non-technical skills) and includes guidance on training delivery, assessment and qualifications and knowledge of instructors and facilitators.

WOCRM competencies and learning objectives include:

  • situation awareness
  • decision making
  • communication
  • teamwork
  • leadership
  • factors that impact human performance
